Oluwajeda Sodiq Adekoya's journey from Nigeria to Edinburgh began with his passion for political science, which he studied as an undergraduate in Nigeria. This passion led him to pursue the MSc in Political Communication and Public Affairs at ÐÔÓÃÉç University. Oluwajeda chose ÐÔÓÃÉç for its high-quality teaching, interactive learning environment, and the opportunity to engage with a diverse student body. In this Student Story, Oluwajeda shares his academic experiences, the appeal of the vibrant city of Edinburgh, and the invaluable support he has received from ÐÔÓÃÉç's staff and services. With the Master's course having deepened his knowledge, Oluwajeda aims to return to Nigeria to shape the future of Nigerian politics, aspiring to work in political consulting and ultimately enter politics himself.

Why did you choose to study at ÐÔÓÃÉç University?
The high quality of teaching at ÐÔÓÃÉç was a significant draw for me. In Nigeria, while the education system provided a solid foundation, I yearned for an environment where interactive learning and practical applications were emphasised. ÐÔÓÃÉç’s reputation for excellence in these areas promised a more engaging and supportive academic experience. Additionally, I was eager to meet people from diverse cultural backgrounds, enhancing my understanding of global political dynamics and enriching my personal growth.

What interested you about your chosen course?
Political Communication and Public Affairs fascinated me because it merges my interest in politics with the intricacies of communication strategies and public engagement. The course promised to deepen my understanding of how political narratives are crafted and disseminated, skills crucial for a career in political consulting or public relations.

Why attracted you to study in Edinburgh?
Edinburgh’s allure was another compelling reason for my choice.

"As the political capital of Scotland, it offers a rich historical and cultural tapestry. The city’s historic buildings, such as the Edinburgh Castle and the beautiful museums, provide a picturesque backdrop to academic life."

I found the idea of studying in a city that blends history with modernity incredibly appealing.

Did you attend an Open Day/Offer Holder Day? If so, what was your experience like?
I had the opportunity to attend an Open Day at ÐÔÓÃÉç, which solidified my decision. The experience was overwhelmingly positive. I was able to interact with the current students who were not only welcoming but also insightful about the course and the university's offerings. The campus tour highlighted the excellent facilities and the supportive environment, confirming that ÐÔÓÃÉç was the right choice for me.

What have you most enjoyed about your course? What has been the highlight?
One of the most enjoyable aspects of my course has been the interactive lectures and seminars. The highlight, however, was a project where we analysed real political campaigns. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, enhancing my learning and providing a taste of real-world political communication.

Have you participated in a course activity you found especially interesting?

"One particularly fascinating activity was our visit to the Scottish Parliament. This excursion provided a live experience of how parliamentary procedures are conducted. Observing debates and committee meetings firsthand brought the theoretical aspects of our studies to life, offering invaluable insights into the practical workings of government."

How have your lecturers supported your learning?
The lecturers at ÐÔÓÃÉç have been incredibly supportive. They are approachable and always willing to provide additional guidance, whether through office hours or online consultations. Their feedback on assignments has been constructive, helping me to improve continuously. Additionally, my program coordinator has been exceptionally helpful. During times when I faced challenges in a course, she provided unwavering support and guidance, ensuring I had the resources and encouragement needed to succeed.

What have been some of your challenges with the course and university life? How have you overcome them?
Adapting to a new academic system and life in a foreign country were initial challenges. The rigorous coursework and adjusting to the colder climate of Edinburgh were tough. However, the university’s support services, including academic counselling and student support groups, played a crucial role in helping me adapt. Engaging with student societies also helped me build a network of friends, making the transition smoother.

Do you have any advice for students who might be interested in applying for this course?

"For students considering this course, my advice is to embrace every opportunity ÐÔÓÃÉç offers. Engage actively with your lecturers and peers, participate in extracurricular activities, and take advantage of placement opportunities. These experiences will not only enrich your understanding but also prepare you for a successful career in political communication and public affairs."

My journey at ÐÔÓÃÉç University has been transformative, equipping me with the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career while allowing me to enjoy the vibrant and historic city of Edinburgh.

What ÐÔÓÃÉç student services have you used to support you through your university journey and how have they helped you?
I utilised several student services at ÐÔÓÃÉç, including the Effective Learning Service, which was incredibly helpful for my essay writing and assessments. The support I received improved my academic writing skills and equipped me with strategies to handle complex assignments effectively. These services were instrumental in enhancing my academic performance and confidence.

Are you a member of any clubs or societies at ÐÔÓÃÉç? If so, what was the reason you joined and what do you enjoy most about it?
I was an active member of the community of African students and the broader international student community. This involvement allowed me to receive and provide support, share information, and build strong networks with both current students and alumni. This engagement helped me ÐÔÓÃÉç essential skills such as networking, cultural competence, and leadership.

What’s your ‘top tip’ for making the most of being a student?
My top tip for making the most of being a student is to take full advantage of all the resources and opportunities available at the university. Engage actively with your lecturers and peers, participate in extracurricular activities, and make use of student support services. Building a strong support network and seeking help when needed are crucial for a successful university experience.

What has been the most valuable lesson that you’ve learned at university?

"The most valuable lesson I have learned at university is the importance of resilience and adaptability. University life, especially in a foreign country, comes with its challenges, but learning to adapt and persevere through difficulties has been invaluable. These experiences have not only shaped my academic journey but have also prepared me for future professional and personal challenges."

What are you plans after graduation? Tell us about your ambitions and where you see yourself in the future?
After graduation, I aspire to work in political consulting or public relations, utilising the skills and knowledge I have gained at ÐÔÓÃÉç. My long-term plan is to return to Nigeria and use my expertise to shape the future of Nigerian politics. I am particularly interested in roles that involve crafting communication strategies for political campaigns or public policy initiatives, with the ultimate goal of entering politics myself.
I aim to contribute to the ÐÔÓÃÉçment of more transparent and effective political communication in Nigeria, promoting better governance and civic engagement. By applying the insights and experiences I have gathered from my time at ÐÔÓÃÉç, I hope to drive positive change and, ultimately, become a better leader who can influence the political landscape of my country for the better.
